How should I pick my Stage Name?

Before picking a stage name, it’s important to understand what that means and some things that you should consider.

Your stage name is your brand, your identity, and your character. It’s very important to think through a few items prior to selecting one and using it for the first time.

A very easy way to pick a name that won’t likely identify you is to use a random name generator. There are several available that will just put two totally random names together and every so often, they sound good. Here’s a good example of a name generator with a few fun ways to inspire your new name.

Once you think you found the name that you want to use, the next step is very important and will save you a lot of headache. Go search for that name on several different sites. Check the large tube sites, check Google, check social media. Make sure that the name you want to use isn’t already in use or going to return a bunch of Wikipedia pages for a famous 16th Century philosopher.

The next step is to consider the the name you have in mind vs. a completely random name. Many times, people have a stage name in mind and it’s inspired by some life experience. Maybe it’s a family member or a bitter high school rival or a celebrity that you always wanted to be like. It may be best to go a different direction, though. That family member or high school rival could cause trouble if they found out about your new career. That celebrity may outrank you in internet and social media searches. So, be unique.

When we say that it’s your brand, we mean that. All too often, performers change their name mid-career. This can result in a loss of a lot of traffic and revenue for you. It’s very important to find something that you’re ready to stick with and remember, the name won’t make you money, but changing it can cost you a lot.

The last thing to do is to create an account with every social media platform, purchase the domain with your new name, and even talk with a trademark attorney about protecting the use of your name.

This is the start, now it’s time to make a name for your new name.
